Match report  Atoms Vs Atomics, Wednesday 11th September.

Match Report by Emma Strachan

There was an excited energy in the air as Aberdeen Atoms prepared for their first match as part of the 4th division of the Aberdeen District Netball Association local league. Atoms and Atomics prepared to face their first match rivals- each other! This was significant game for both teams as the Atoms played their first official match as part of the new team, and the Atomic players (for the most part) experienced their first taste of the competitive local league.

The Atomics began their game in the first quarter a little apprehensive, taking time to find their feet and getting to grips with Atoms defence. However, with some strong vocal encouragement from match-day coach Katy Boyes, the second quarter saw the Atomics coming back with fighting spirit, controlling more of the game play and upping their goal score. The third quarter saw an upped momentum from all team members. In the attacking circle, shooters Jill Esson and **** displayed fantastic shooting skills and circle work scoring a number of superb shots from some difficult positions. Atomics defence worked hard, Helen Lund providing some needed aggression and Nicole Webber (who was later nominated at Atoms player of the match) kept up a high energy level and getting some vital interceptions. This play continued into the fourth quarter where the Atomics continued to demonstrate undeniable drive, energy and want for the ball. Atomics play was resonant of developing court positioning skills, of which had been conducted during training sessions prior to match day.

Although the Atoms came away with the win, for the first match of the season Atomics put on an impressive game showing huge improvements from start to finish, and in comparison to initial training sessions. Player conduct on court was second to none, resulting in a well-played and well contested game from the Atomic team members. Well done ladies, great work!
