Aberdeen Atoms v Aberdeen Atomics – Wednesday 11th September – Cults Academy 8.45pm

Match Report by Ann-Marie Elsey

It was the first game of the season for this club who recently formed earlier this year. This didn’t stop the game beginning with a flying start from the Atoms. Good attacking play saw the ball being picked up in the Atomics goal quarter to be converted to a goal quite decisively from Buckley despite some good defensive play from Lund.

You could sense a bit of nerves from the Atomics which was evident in the lack of action in their goal quarter however they got into their stride towards the end of the 1st quarter and managed to secure their first ever goal 10 mins into the game.

The 2nd quarter started in the same vein but with a more confident Atomics side. Good passing from the Atoms was countered by some good defensive play from the Atomics. An injury caused a small delay to play which seemed to affect the Atomics player whilst the Atoms continued to consistently convert their centre passes into goals with some fantastic goals from the edge of the goal circle.

Atomics however fought back and produced some great attacking play which seen them score a run of goals. The Atoms were not to be beaten however and also countered this with a good run of goals as we reached the end of the 2nd quarter.

As the 3rd quarter started the Atoms started strong with goals from both Waite & Belka despite some good defensive play from Webber. Atomics were getting into their stride now and their confidence was growing during the match which seen some good centre court action from both sides. As the game progressed, you could see the Atoms starting to feel the heat as they started to give away a few penalties.

The final quarter got off to a flying start for the Atomics with 3 goals from the off-set and some great marking in defence. There were a few tired legs on court now, however Webber from the Atomics continued to chase down every ball and showed great energy on the court. Despite improvements from the Atomics in the centre passing, the Atoms had some strong defenders who managed to leap for the centre passes and drove the ball forward and made some strong passes.

The final score was 68-10 which was perhaps an unfair reflection of the teamwork and play from both these teams. Overall, a positive start for this new club who showed great energy and determination.

A special thanks to the clubs sponsors Scotmid and NOV whose donation was sportsmatched.
